Commercial freight traffic and especially road freight traffic is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the traffic. According to the forecast of Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs road freight traffic in Germany will rise by 21 percent to 605 billion ton-kilometers by the year 2020.
The logistic strategies of manufacturing companies and the related flow of goods have a great impact on commercial freight traffic. This includes for example the traffic-related consequences of manufacturing depth and continuously decreasing shipment size. Most existing traffic models are macroscopic. Therefore, they are not able to represent individual manufacturing companies and provide only aggregated results.
The degree of influence of logistic decisions of manufacturing companies on commercial freight traffic is insufficiently explored. Therefore, there is a lack of tools providing sufficiently detailed quantitative and qualitative assessment of the impact of logistic decisions of manufacturing companies.
This situation motivated the development of the model representing the impact of delivery time windows definition by manufacturing companies on commercial freight traffic. This model provides the possibility to better understand the generation reasons of commercial freight traffic, especially to quantify the coherences of delivery frequencies and kilometric performance.
For a detailed representation of commercial freight traffic the microscopic scale of analysis was chosen. This scale provides a differentiated representation of relevant objects and subjects of commercial freight traffic, such as shippers, receivers, shipments and thus the modeling of logistic decisions of each individual company.
The result of this thesis represents coherences of procurement strategies of manufacturing companies and quantifiable characteristics of commercial freight traffic. Furthermore a tool is developed that can be applied for research of further issues (e.g. traffic-related consequences of relocation of manufacturing companies) in the subject area of freight traffic. This is an important contribution to better understanding of commercial freight traffic and its reasons.
