Zusammenfassung / Abstract

User’s satisfaction has been a matter of concern to service providers in provisioning their services. As a consequence, the concept of QoE (Quality of Experience) has been introduced in the telecommunication industry for presenting the service quality from the customer’s voices.

One of the focuses in the research area of QoE of IP services is to examine the relationship between the QoE performance and the network transport condition (network Quality of Service). Finding the relationship between them is of primary importance to the Internet Service Providers to better understand user’s perception about their services and with more important, to help to optimize their revenue and network resources.

In this thesis, we focus on QoE of MPEG video streaming services. Our investigations are provided from two main aspects. First, we focus on the assessment of the short-term video quality in the presence of packet losses. A novel methodology which is impairment- based has been proposed by considering the video impairments and the type how they occur can directly determine the end user’s perception. For the purpose of developing our assessment method, a series of subjective tests covering a wide area of packet losses have been conducted. The impact from different characteristics of packet losses, e.g., loss type, loss position, loss frequency, loss distance etc., have been intensively explored.

The second part of our work targets to guarantee/protect the MPEG video perceptual quality in a network with packet losses such as a wireless LAN. Based on the results from our first investigation, QoE-based Hybrid ARQ mechanisms have been proposed for packet loss recovery. Our simulation results show the efficiency of our proposed methods in terms of guaranteeing the user’s satisfaction and in reducing the network requirements.
