Zusammenfassung / Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to investigate novel techniques for autonomous indoor pedestrian localization and navigation. Particular attention is given to techniques based on passive UHF RFID technology. In recent years, location-aware systems have become more portable, cheaper and easier-to-use, thanks mostly to advances in personal smart devices. While interest in these systems has increased greatly and hardware costs have fallen, localization techniques and algorithms need to catch up.

This dissertation investigates the possibility of applying passive UHF RFID for indoor pedestrian localization. While RFID is the spotlight technique, other conventional localization techniques for pedestrians will be integrated too. Part of the dissertation is about the hybridization of different localization subsystems.

The target application of this work is a museum guiding system. Conventional museum guiding systems are usually built upon a local database, multimedia systems as well as manual input from visitors. Novel systems relying on autonomous localization can improve the interactivity between exhibits and visitors. The location service is provided locally in such systems by the visitor-carried devices. The dissertation takes museum guidance as an example for demonstrating the proposed techniques and algorithms in real-world applications.
