Philipp Dietmar Tiefenbacher Mobile Mediated Reality
226 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität München (2017), Softcover, A5
Smart devices have advanced the digital age, because they allow viewing and interacting with virtual content anytime and almost everywhere. The digital content displayed on these devices is explicitly separated from the real world and isolates socially. Since the information is only visible on a single device, it is challenging to let others participate in the virtual experience.
Mediated reality aims at defining one world that blends real and digital content and treats them as equal, i.e., real and virtual content can be added, edited, and removed from the world.
This thesis targets the challenges of embedding mediated reality on a handheld device: Tracking, diminished reality, and virtual content manipulation.
First, a markerless tracking technique is presented that integrates inertial measurement units and allows precisely aligning virtual and real content.
Combining the results of the tracking algorithm with the findings in image inpainting, a new algorithm is derived that imperceptibly deducts real-world content in real time. Since mediated reality includes the adaption of new and existing virtual contents, techniques are proposed that permit easy manipulation of virtual objects directly on the handheld. A computer-supported cooperative work confirms the benefits of mediated reality. Here, the blending of virtual objects with the real world demonstrates to be superior to digital drawings. This thesis shows that the challenges of a mobile mediated reality can and are worth to be mastered.
