Steffen Wulf Human Perception in Objective Video Quality Assessment and Video Coding
162 Seiten, Dissertation Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg (2016), Softcover, A5
This thesis investigates to what extent human vision can be exploited in a profitable way in the field of objective video quality assessment and video coding.
First, the performance of objective video quality metrics is analyzed. Several techniques, motived by the way how humans perceive visual quality, are investigated aiming at improving a metric’s accuracy without the need to modify it itself.
Second, two approaches are presented taking aspects of human perception during the encoding of a video sequence by means of saliency maps into account. In addition, they are compared to and extended by a popular and widely-used method from the field of perceptual video coding.
