This thesis dealt with the application of digital signal processing to increase the data-rate- length product of polymer optical fiber (POF) based communication systems. Especially the combination of multilevel modulation and digital receiver equalization was investi- gated in theory and in various experiments for different combinations of light sources and fiber types. Finally a fully working Gigabit Ethernet media converter using a red LED and a PIN photodiode was built on a FPGA platform.
