Structure and Function of the Contractile Vacuoles of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

164 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Köln (2013), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

The results presented in this work provide insights into the structure and the behavior of the contractile vacuoles in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and their reaction towards changes in the osmotic environment. The CV size depends on the cell size, whereas with modification of the CV period the cells react to changes of the osmotic environment. Two proteins were identified to be clearly involved in the CV function, the aquaporin CreMIP1 and the exocyst subunit CreSEC6. Most likely the exocyst is involved in membrane fusion events between the CV and the PM, and homotypic vacuolar membrane fusions. Moreover, it is likely that the exocyst prevent the CV membrane to get incorporated into the PM. First evidence for the involvement of the dynamin-like protein and a protein containing a Kelch domain (a calmodulin binding motif) was found.
