Towards Future Automotive Safety Applications based on Phased-Array FMCW-Radar Sensors - a Holistic Simulative Approach Incorporating RF-Frontend Impairments

218 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2015), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Driven by the conception of continuously increasing traffic safety and supported recently by various technology advancements, automotive radar systems are considered to have great potential. In order to promote the transition from pure comfort to future active safety applications, which require an enhanced perception of the vehicle's vicinity, a holistic system simulation environment has been implemented. Consequently, it encompasses all involved domains of the automotive radar area of operations, i.e. the RF-frontends, antennas and the radar channel including the complex traffic situation, while considering all relevant impairments. Thus, a comprehensive view on the radar system in its entirety, which remains accurate even under challenging conditions, is enabled.

In this context, a novel concept of an adaptively controlled phased-array radar frontend is developed, with the sensor‘s focus being advantageously aligned to the road‘s curvature. As a result, simulations demonstrate that, compared to state-of-the-art sensors providing only body-fixed antenna beams, the system‘s performance improves distinctly as more measurement distance is made available. during curve passage.
