Uta Schwenke Analysis of electrolyte stability and the effect of contaminants in aprotic Li-O2 cells
165 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität München (2015), Softcover, A5
The aprotic Li-air battery has attracted considerable research interest mainly due to the exceptionally high theoretical specifc capacity of the oxygen cathode. The reactivity of oxygen reduction reaction intermediates such as superoxide radicals prevents utilization of typical Li-ion battery cell materials. In this work, several screening tests were developed to investigate the stability of electrolyte solvents, conductive salts and cathode binders. Counterintuitively, the discharge capacity increased when reactive materials were used. Thorough analysis of the discharge products revealed that moisture, in particular, led to increased discharge capacities due to lithium peroxide crystallization. In addition, an in operando DRIFTS cell was designed, constructed and tested.
