Thimo Pascal Stoll Essays on the Economics of Patents, Standards, and Innovation
112 Seiten, Dissertation Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (2014), Softcover, A5
This dissertation comprises three self-contained essays on topics from industrial organization and innovation economics. It provides an insight into the complex interplay between patents and technical standards and aims to determine the significance of standards for inventive and innovative processes.
The first essay, "Patent Strategy and the Impact of Standardization on Invention Dynamics," conducts an explorative analysis into the relationships between patenting strategies, standard-setting processes, and the intensity of competition surrounding patents.
The second essay, "Are You Still In? – The Impact of Licensing Requirements on the Composition of Standards Setting Organizations,” is concerned with the incentives for various parties to affiliate themselves with a standards setting organization (SSO), as well as for remaining affiliated when the SSO alters their licensing policies.
The third essay, "Standards and the Division of Innovative Labor," was coauthored by Dietmar Harhoff and Timothy Simcoe. It investigates inventors’ likelihood for building on existing standards, and how these standards can affect the division of labor in the innovation process.
