Dominik Anton Hepp When Young Firms Change Their Innovation Strategy - The Dynamics of Openness
166 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität München (2015), Softcover, A5
Organizations change their revealing behavior over time in order to find or sustain an optimal position. Specifically, I propose a distinction between three triggers of change: unsatisfactory outcomes of earlier search processes (“ongoing optimization”), changing conditions that render a hitherto successful solution suboptimal (“changing conditions”), and changing firm goals that revise a firm’s performance definition (“changing firm goals”). By examining firms that change their engagement in selective revealing to higher or lower levels, I find evidence of all three triggers. Conditions may change due to firm growth, an increased availability of resources and marketing, and an increased risk of imitation while the understanding of performance may shift from surviving and being a good community player to building a scalable business.
