Microfluidic miniaturization can provide benefits for liquid based diagnosis systems creating so called Lab-on-Chips. Large optical setups can be miniaturized by microfluidics as well, creating optofluidic devices with novel properties and applications.
This thesis covers both piezoelectric actuators for diagnosis systems and microfluidic actuators for optical systems.
With the help of those actuators, automated point-of-care diagnosis systems have been realized, improving speed, reliability and precision of clinical tests. Optofluidic building-blocks that drive the integration of larger optical assemblies have also been made possible by the microfluidic actuation systems developed and tested.
