Ilya Lukin Rotating Packed Bed Application for Aroma Recovery Intensification
185 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Dortmund (2020), Softcover, A5
Although an increasing supplementation of products with aromas led to a rising interest in the biotechnological aroma production, their recovery from crude broth remains the major hurdle to overcome. Starting from crude Escherichia coli fermentation broth, a simple and yield maximized recovery process was developed for the biotechnologically produced enantiopure (R)-α-ionone, a key aroma of raspberry.
For higher volatile aromas, absorption from the bioreactor off-gas is beneficial but should involve some mass transfer intensifying apparatuses. Moving to novel downstream concepts, the application of Rotating Packed Bed (RPB) for the intensification of aroma recovery was explored. The results show that the RPB technology could be considered for the intensification of aroma recovery primarily for large scale processes with such deal-breakers as height limitations, frequent start-ups and shut-downs, and tight control specifications for fluctuating feeds. Whenever high viscosity or solid content challenge the operation of static columns, the employment of RPBs is strongly recommended. In order to overcome the persisting skepticism of RPB application, a broader understanding of the mass transfer phenomena inside the machine should be acquired.
