Daniel Popp Research and Design of High Power and High Bandwidth Digital Three-Way Doherty Power Amplifier
123 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2020), Softcover, A4
This work is dedicated to the research and development of high efficient and broadband Doherty power amplifiers supporting multiple transmission standards in the lower L-Band region. Due to a rich variety of diverse peak and average power requirements and the usage of multi-carrier modulated waveforms several challenges have to be solved. The most essential challenges are efficient amplification, transistor parasitics, large fractional bandwidth and low complexity design flow.
An enhanced combiner architecture with transformer offset-lines is introduced and analyzed. A comprehensive mathematical solution is derived and the degrees of freedom are used for optimizing efficiency and fractional bandwidth. It is shown that this architecture is especially suited for high power amplifiers. The commonly deployed static splitter is replaced by drive functions for maximizing fractional bandwidth. Finally, an agnostic and low complexity design method is introduced using the novel combiner and incorporating drive functions together with non-linear transistor models in the design flow to obtain high efficient and broadband Doherty power amplifiers.
