An approach for P&ID module selection based on limited information during early module-based plant design

116 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Dortmund (2022), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Module-based plant design enables the opportunity for the (bio-) chemical industry to reduce lead times and to be competitive while facing increasing economic volatility. By selecting and configuring modules, time-consuming and tailor-made plant design steps are replaced.

The P&ID Module Database is the only one that already exists so that generating Modular P&IDs can be transferred beneficially to process industry in the shortest term. Although of central importance, approaches to ensure more reliable selection of P&ID Modules than methods from early conventional plant design enables have not yet been developed. Therefore, two approaches are presented in this work for the selection of Basic P&ID Modules, which define the equipment types, focusing on the knockout step and rating step, respectively. For the knockout step, a new approach is introduced to characterize operating ranges of Basic P&ID Modules. Operating ranges and process tasks are arranged in the feature space, whose number of dimensions is significantly reduced compared to the number of all relevant process parameters that are still considered. By simply calculating the features and comparing them to the operating ranges, prediction is enabled whether any detailed design of an equipment type could fulfill certain process tasks without actually performing detailed design calculations during early plant design. For the rating step, an approach is presented to increase accuracy of investment cost estimation for Basic P&ID Modules compared to conventional methods. Foundation is the design space that enables the prediction of all potentially operable equipment designs without the need for tailor-made design, Equipment Module Database or even the determination of the final equipment design.

Both approaches are successfully applied to heat exchanger Basic P&ID Modules and are evaluated using industrial process tasks.
