Anne-Kathrin Braun Optimizing the user experience of mobile Augmented Reality applications
202 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Koblenz-Landau (2012), Softcover, B5
A mobile AR system consists of various components which make the user experience and the experience design for AR applications to a very complex and challenging task. The success of mobile AR application depends on carefully decided design and technology. Past and today’s AR applications are often too technical and too complex, thus users were often overwhelmed. The reason is that the handling is difficult and the attention is drawn off.
These problems are addressed by optimizing the overall user experience of mobile Augmented Reality applications by optimizing each aspect and component. This thesis investigates and analyzes existing systems and applications and the resulting insights and findings are used to create a framework for user experience of mobile AR applications. This framework considers the special aspect of the multi-dimensional character of AR.
Therefore each single component will be explored and analyzed to get the overall requirements. The single components are categorized into AR Interface, AR Content and registration. In addition to the framework, the main contribution of this thesis are concepts and tech- niques which improve the usability of AR interfaces for believable and self-contained user experience considering that inadequate and inappropriate devices disturb the users’ experiences of AR applications. Guidelines and techniques for using the content of AR applications were developed to provide self-contained, shared and believable user experience. Furthermore, enabling methods and concepts to improve the localization approach for self-contained and unconstrained user experience have been developed.
