Sensing extremely smal magnetic fields with a high spatio-temporal resolution is a significant challenge in the life, physical and chemical sciences.
In this work the development of a new imaging magnetometer based on optically detected magnetic resonance is introduced. Combining a unique quantum sensor, the so-called nitrogen vacancy center, with optics and electron-spin-resonance techniques allow magnetic sensing on the sub-cellular level under ambient conditions. Experiments demonstrate full magnetic vector reconstruction, ultrafast microfluidic spin detection and spin contrast imaging of cellular structures.
The presented findings mark an important step towards versatile sub-cellular magnetic imaging under physiological conditions and pave the way to monitor magnetic dynamics inside living cells.
