Process-oriented Privacy Analysis and Concepts in the Automotive Domain

255 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Ulm (2014), Hardcover, B5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Growth in information and communication technology has led to many advances in the automotive field in recent years. Modern vehicles are equipped with increasingly seamless technologies to enhance the driving safety and experience. Despite their benefits, these advancements raise serious questions regarding driver privacy and will, unless basic measures are adopted, pose challenges for car manufacturers in the future.

This work, therefore, specifically addresses the challenge of preventively analyzing, supporting, and deploying privacy in the automotive domain. As privacy in this domain is a relatively new and complex discipline, it required an initial and overall privacy analysis and structuring, which has been performed in this work. Based on our findings, we designed a generic privacy process dedicated to vehicular development with minimal interruptions to normal development processes and proposed novel technologies and concepts to realize such a process for a car manufacturer.

We demonstrate the applicability and function of the approach with a case example based on a current vehicle model and its specifications. Our example shows that privacy in the automotive domain can be improved and maintained by treating privacy protection as a process of different tasks. Altogether, our approach provides a structured procedure and novel tools to thwart privacy failures in the automotive domain.
