Torben Beeck Small, Size-Selected and Deposited Clusters on Magnetic and Non-Magnetic 3d Transition Metal Surfaces
139 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Hamburg (2015), Hardcover, B5
In this thesis, the electronic and magnetic properties of in situ prepared, size-selected, pure (Co) and alloy clusters (CoRh) on magnetic (Ni) and non-magnetic (Cu) 3d transition metal surfaces are studied by means of x-ray absorption as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XAS, XMCD). The chemical and electronic properties of small, size-selected and deposited clusters exhibit a strong size dependence which is also influenced by the hybridization with the underlying substrate. Further alloying of a certain cluster size results in additional modifications as a function of the stoichiometry. XAS and XMCD techniques allow to study the changes of the electronic and magnetic cluster properties in an element-selective way. From the XMCD spectra, the orbital and spin magnetic moments can be derived separately by applying magneto-optical sum rules.
