Fabian Weyßer Rheology of Brownian Discs
162 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Konstanz (2011), Softcover, B5
This work uses a model system of a mixture of binary hard discs under shear to investigate the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of glass formers in two dimensions. As computer simulations provide a powerful mean to analyze the behavior of dense fluids close to the glass transition, an implementation for a technique, suitable to simulate hard discs undergoing Brownian motion with an external shear field, is presented. Furthermore, extensions of the algorithm to time dependent fields are provided. With the aid of this simulation it is possible to give answers to one fundamental question: Is there a glass transition possible in two dimensions and can it be characterized? The answer to this question leads to further intriguing results about the influence of composition of the mixture and the radius ratio on the glass transition. Constant external shear fields are able to melt the frozen in structure: The system's nonlinear answer is non-trivially connected to the findings for time dependent shear fields.
