Michael Bußhardt Timing and uncertainty in pointer-based quantum measurements
212 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Ulm (2011), Hardcover, B5
In 1927 Werner Heisenberg envisioned a simultaneous measurement of position and momentum of a quantum particle. Ultimately, his ingenious gedanken experiment lead to the discovery of the uncertainty principle, which by now represents a hallmark of quantum theory. However, the discussion of its meaning and its consequences is still a vivid part of research in physics and philosophy.
In this thesis, we discuss a novel approach to the concept of simultaneous quantum measurements. We explore their fundamental limits as well as the significance of time and energy in such a setup. Moreover, a phase space description allows us to gain insight into the distinctive features of joint quantum measurements.
