Optimal Control of Particles in Fluids

190 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Kaiserslautern (2011), Softcover, A5

Zusammenfassung / Abstract

This thesis deals with optimal control of particles driven by laminar as well as turbulent flows. Flow dynamics are modeled by means of the Navier-Stokes equations in case of low Reynolds number incompressible flow while for turbulent flow the standard k-epsilon model is used. Particle dynamics for three different cases is considered: spherical particles with mass, small light particles represented as a 1D object with a neglected inertia and elliptical particles or fibers. Tracking of particles trajectories or their final positions in an open channel is achieved by means of adjoint calculus where the application of Lagrange formalism is crucial. In particular steepest descent method and a modified version of Aggressive Space-Mapping are applied to the optimization process for flows in laminar and turbulent regimes, respectively. Furthermore, a numerical comparison among optimal, instantaneous and space-mapping control is also included.
