Stefan Döbrich Performance Improvement of Adaptive Processors
291 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Dresden (2013), Hardcover, A5
Over the last 30 years, the field of embedded systems has improved dramatically and today touches most areas of our lives. Evolving from simple devices, the computing power of embedded systems has improved significantly during the last years. In order to keep pace with technological advances, many systems are replaced before their end-of-lifetime. However, replacing a fully functional system is ineffective regarding the costs and resource consumption of the device's production process. Hence, it is necessary to provide a possibility, which allows the system's processor to adapt to a given application at runtime, and thereby improving its own performance. That way, a system's lifetime can be prolonged, leading to a more sustainable use of resources. This book presents the techniques of hardware synthesis, instruction folding and microcode assembly as approaches to such a runtime dynamic processor adaptation.
