Martin Strzys Ultracold heat – Dynamics of mesoscopic Bose–Hubbard systems with intrinsic time scale separation
239 Seiten, Dissertation Technische Universität Kaiserslautern (2013), Hardcover, A5
The topic of the present thesis is the analysis of mesoscopic Bose–Hubbard systems with a distinct time scale hierarchy. The Bose–Hubbard model is the standard tight-binding description of bosons in periodic potentials which can be realized experimentally using ultracold atoms held in optical lattice potentials. Small systems with an intrinsic time scale hierarchy are the perfect model systems for investigating the connection of mechanics and thermodynamics. In this thesis an effective theory of the low-frequency excitations of such systems is developed and interpreted in terms of heat. Effects like spontaneous concentration of heat are observed and explained in both mechanical and thermodynamical terms.
