Zusammenfassung / Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is one of the most versatile tools for gathering information about the dynamics of molecular processes down to the atomic level. It is widely used in physical and life sciences, but has been limited to large sample quantities due to the low sensitivity of conventional induction based detection methods.

This work aims at the development to probe the 3D chemical/elemental composition of nanostructures via NMR spectroscopy. Individually addressable paramagnetic centers near the surface of a diamond host are used to probe sample spin species in its immediate vicinity. Combining methods of single molecule spectroscopy and electron spin resonance enables the measurement of NMR signals of nanoscopic sample volumes under ambient conditions.

Extensions of the presented work could substantially expand the microscopist’s toolbox, eventually allowing for a non-destructive imaging of complex macromolecules and/or investigating the dynamics of diverse biochemical systems.
