Anita Gaj Ultralong-range Rydberg molecules in external electric and magnetic fields

This work focuses on the experimental investigation of Rydberg molecules in an ultracold atomic gas.
Following the path from the previously observed diatomic molecules, where a single ground state atom is bound to a Rydberg atom, polyatomic molecules up to pentamer states have been observed. Subsequently, the transition from the few body regime to the mean-field regime is shown and discussed.
In the second part of this work, a tunable hybridization of two Rydberg electron orbitals by molecule formation is demonstrated experimentally. The control is realized by manipulating two energetically close molecular states with an external electric field. It is shown that this mixing of states can be described by a simple two-level model.
