Lasse Cornils STM investigations of superconductor hybrid systems: magnetic adatoms and chains on superconductors to thin superconducting films on topological insulators
271 Seiten, Dissertation Universität Hamburg (2019), Softcover, A5
The realization of quantum computation has been a dream of scientists over many decades. It is believed that quantum computers can outperform existing powerful classical computers and revolutionize knowledge of the society in fields like biomedical simulations, finance, logistics along with artificial intelligence and material science. Since today's quantum computers cannot fulfill its full potential due to high error rates an alternative approach is needed. Topological quantum computation using Majorana bound states is one such option. These exotic particles obey non-Abelian braiding statistics and have been proposed to be detected, characterized and manipulated with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopes. In this thesis, two sample systems were investigated which can host these states: magnetic chains on s-wave superconductors and thin films of Fe-based superconductors on three-dimensional topological insulators.
