This work advances both the measurement of both classical electric field transients and quantum experiments using ultrabroadband electro-optic sampling. A full description of electro-optic sampling via sum and difference frequency mixing enables the isolation of both the electric field and - for the first time - its conjugate variable in the time domain. Furthermore, the correlation properties of intensity fluctuations in the sampling pulses generated via highly nonlinear fibers are determined and empower passive noise cancellation in additional nonlinear mixing steps.
